  • At least one publishable paper as well as research presentation at ACFAS Annual Scientific Conference with manuscript or poster.
  • Clinical research opportunities, such as reporting a case series of a specific diagnosis or procedure, are often encouraged. Many programs have a formal requirement to complete at least one manuscript for publication during the year. A fellow may be asked to author a review paper or book chapter.
  • Participation in innovations labs, academic meetings, and research presentations. Specific educational block time will be provided to the fellow accordingly.
  • The fellow will participate in ACFAS-fellow structured journal clubs, as scheduled; and monthly in-office journal clubs with the faculty. Fellowship cases will be discussed at monthly educational meetings with the faculty.

Program Summary/Training Goals:

  • One position for a 12-month reconstructive surgical fellowship that has completed a three years of surgical residency training with appropriate logging.
  • Fellow is exposed to advanced techniques in all aspects of foot and ankle surgery and reconstruction, including circular frames, arthrodesis of midfoot and hindfoot, TAR, 3-D custom design implants, pediatric care, fracture care, and Charcot Reconstruction. The fellow will have the opportunity to be exposed to a wide array of both clinical and surgical treatments of the foot and ankle. The fellow will be expected to manage patients pre-operatively, intra-operatively, and post-operatively. The fellowship averages roughly 350-400 cases annually.
  • Additional training emphasis on clinical decision making, research/publication and practice management with an in-house coder and biller, and outpatient and inpatient rounding and call.
  • This is a high-volume fellowship with high expectations. Fellows are trained in a multidisciplinary foot and ankle practice with exposure to a wide variety of foot and ankle pathology. Therefore, the fellow must be motivated, independent, and poses the skill set expected from a three-year surgical training program.
  • Fellows will have the opportunity to collect cases for board certification through the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgeons; therefore, the fellow is encouraged to achieve Board Qualification through ABFAS and maintain an active ACFAS membership.
